Rather than keeping your old electronics in a drawer that collects dust, you can easily sell them for gift cards or cash.

Not only is it a great way to pull in extra money, it’s also better for the environment, and it is a great way to declutter your home.

Of course, it does require extra work. You have to research where to sell old electronics and find out how much your devices are worth. It can be time-consuming.

Fortunately, you are in luck because this post will make that process a lot easier for you.

The Realization That I Need To Get Rid Of My Own Electronics

I have been obsessed with electronics for as long as I can remember.

When I was a kid, it was micro-cassette recorders, Panasonic Shockwave Walkmans, and 45 second anti-skip CD players.

In my teenage years, my interest in technology switched to flip phones and smart phones. I got my first cellphone in grade 12.

Just a few years later, Blackberry introduced us to a Smartphone with a qwerty keyboard. Even though Blackberries were intended for business professionals, I was immediately obsessed and got one as soon as I could.

Of course, just a few years later, the iPhone would come along and completely transform the mobile phone industry into the touch-screen market we know today.

So, around 2010, I switched to the iPhone 4. I held onto that iPhone for 4 years, until the iPhone 6 Plus was released. 

Then, I switched to the iPhone 7 Plus because of the matte black look and to gain extra memory. My iPhone 6 Plus was just a 16 GB model.

Around 2019, my iPhone 7 Plus was beginning to seem a bit archaic. The iPhone X was out but I didn’t like the design. The iPhone 5 and the iPhone X are the only iPhones I haven’t liked. Because I was not a fan of how the iPhone X looked, and because the screen was too small, I opted for a Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

Needless to say, I’ve wasted a lot of money on smartphones and electronics. And I haven’t even mentioned the laptops or iPads I’ve owned. 

Admittedly, I have a hard time selling old devices because of how personal they are. 

But all these old electronics are starting to build up. They’re literally just sitting in a bag in a closet in my office. It’s such a waste of space, to tell you the truth.

In the interest of decluttering and to earn some extra money, I am in the process of selling my old devices. 

Mainly, I want to sell my iPhone 7 Plus and my iPad Air.

After completing some research about where to sell old electronics for money, I have determined that these are the best options:

1. Kijiji 

Payment options: Cash or e-Transfer 

Kijiji is an online classified advertising network that allows users to buy, sell, or trade nearly anything.

I have personally used it to sell an old camera and a smartphone.

In my opinion, Kijiji is the best option for Canadian buyers and sellers because it allows you to maintain the most control.

You can list the item for any price you want, and you can sell it to who you want.

It is also a great website to do research and find comparable prices for the old electronics you want to sell.

If you reside in Canada and you are looking to make extra money from your devices, Kijiji is the first option you should try.

2. eBay

Payment options: Cash or PayPal

eBay and Kijiji are closely related.

In fact, eBay actually owns Kijiji. 

So, if you live in the United States, you should check out eBay to sell your old electronics.

Similar to Kijiji, you can research prices and post your own items online for sale.

Before Kijiji existed, I sold and shipped a BMX bike online. It was a quick way to turn an unused bike into extra money.

3. Sell To Friends And Family

Payment option: Cash or whatever you ask for

I know what you are thinking…

What kind of cheapskate would sell old electronics to friends and family?

Shouldn’t you just give it to them?

To that I would say it depends.

If you come from the kind of family that gave you a down payment for a house, you should give old electronics to them. If you charged them after they gave you a $20,000 downpayment, you are a total cheapskate. 

Alternatively, if your family or friends are less fortunate than you, you should give old electronics to them. Especially if you can afford it.

But if your family and friends are well off, and you could use the money, you can earn some extra cash while giving them a deal.

4. Best Buy

Payment option: Gift card

If you don’t feel like going through the selling process, you could consider trading your old electronics in at Best Buy.

Keep in mind, though, they will pay you with a gift card, not cash.

On the other hand, the process is extremely simple.

To receive a gift card for your old electronics, simply visit a Best Buy store, get your device valued, and receive a gift card.

If you are more interested in decluttering than earning extra money, this is a quick way to get your unused devices out of your hands.

However, because you have no control over the price, this is not the highest-paying option.

5. Apple Trade–In

Payment options: Credit towards a new device or Apple Store gift card

If you plan to stick with iPhone, you could consider Apple’s trade-in program.

They will allow you to trade in your old iPhone for a credit towards your next purchase, or you can receive an Apple Store gift card to use whenever you want.

Furthermore, if your device is worthless, they will take the old device off your hands for free and recycle it.

Regardless of what model of phone or the condition, they will recycle it at no cost.

Although it is probably the best option for the environment, it is likely not the best option to make the most extra money.

6. Amazon Trade-In

Payment option: Amazon gift card

Another great trade-in option to consider is Amazon.

The Amazon trade-in program allows customers to sell used electronic devices in exchange for an Amazon gift card. 

Frankly, the Amazon gift card is as good as cash, because you can buy almost anything.

If you have old electronics besides smart phones and tablets, Amazon is a good option to consider because you can trade in thousands of items.

7. It’s Worth More

Payment options: PayPal, check, or Zelle

It’s Worth More is supposedly the simplest and safest way to sell your old phone, tablet, or laptop online.

If you visit the website, they have a streamlined system set up that will provide you with the most accurate estimate for your device.

They will ask you what device you have, what condition it’s in, and if you have the original packaging. 

In less than one minute, you will have an estimate for what your device is worth.

If you reside in the U.S., this might be your best option to get paid cash.

8. BuyBack World

Payment options: Check, PayPal, or Venmo

BuyBack World is another great option to sell a wide variety of used electronics for cash.

To sell used items, you simply need to visit the site to get an instant quote. 

According to their website, they offer free shipping and they pay within two days.

Although I have not personally tested out BuyBack World, they have high seller ratings and rave reviews from major publications such as Forbes.

10. decluttr

Payment options: Direct deposit, PayPal, or Charity

According to their website, decluttr pays the most for old tech.

They also seem to be a popular choice amongst major publishers.

And they have a lot of experience, considering they have paid over $300 million to over 6 million customers.

Like BuyBack World, they offer free shipping and a quick turn around time for payments.

For payments, they are one of the only options that will send your cash via direct deposit. They also offer an option to donate the proceeds to charity. 

11. GadgetOne

Payment options: Amazon gift card or PayPal

GadgetOne works the same as the last three options on this list.

You visit the site to get a quote, you ship the device, then you get paid.

To be honest, they all seem the same. So, you can probably just pick the one with the best name and go with it.

If you are willing to spend more time on it, you could get a quote from all four options and then go with whoever is willing to pay the highest.

Where To Sell Old Electronics – Final Thoughts

Now you know where to sell old electronics for money or gift cards.

Essentially, you have three main options to sell old electronics:

• Take full control and sell your old electronics yourself using Kijiji, eBay, or to someone you know
• Trade-in your device for another device or gift card via Apple, Best Buy, or Amazon
• Sell electronics to one of the gadget sites

After doing the research, I still prefer to sell via Kijiji because I can set my own prices.

It requires more work, but it’s the best way to get the most money.
